the Odeon
quite positively the freak of all bars in the mission, where we walked into the last scene of a B movie classic. Big Meat Eater. Finale: the Petty coat pigs-bloodied Dr.Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, Carnivore is being forced out of the room by mama, a stereotypical gypsy-witch, protecting her plump and ready for pickin' daughter, with a jar of Meat Tenderizer. He leaves. Petty coat wakes up the next morning fresh and new, no sign of pig blood on the coat, no need for eye drops for his craniofacial defect which disappeared. He mentions something about not being late for work and walks out of the woods. The film is Canadian, dare I say more. The bar is a bit too, Odeon, so we opt to admire it from a distance, which doesn't keep the bartender and Dana the B-Movie Night organizer from coming over to check up on us. The Bartender is wonderful. He seems totally innocent of his freakishness and dresses in a wool button up shirt and wool cap. He has a scruffy beard, which doesn't hide his enormous smile. It looks like a second chance smile, and it infects the whole bar. The knitting corner has a special 125watt bulb which comforts idle chat and counting stitches. They are making hats, bright pink and lime green, in funny shapes, everyone is wearing knitted clothing too. The elfish dj has just arrived, or made himself apparent, he's up on the bar performing magic tricks, the crowd amuses him with his leprechaun antics of telekinesis, and esp. Red Suspenders and plaid pants plays lots of Nancy and Frank Sinatra, Souxisie and the Banshees and "short people got no reason to live"
the 14 year old blue hair extensions vamp who tied her victim's combat boots to the lounge chair's legs. She won the attention of all bystanders last night as she slipped on and off his lap.
the guy who won the1/2 pound of raw beef, you lucky bastard.
The fat Boston Terrier, Maggie.
The paper airplane attack. We aimed for pints of beer and the sticky flypaper, which handsomely decorated the bar.
Planes of all shapes, crafted by creative imagination of the 7th grade intellect, with materials provided by that weeks, Big Meat Eater bio. The bar had the playful, mom and dad are out of town rambunctious wreck room sort of feel.
Mora: You don't know the Short people song?
Me: I grew up on Barry Manilow and Roger Whittaker
Mora: weird
Me: Yeah
Me: we should come here more often
Mora: Yeah.
Mora: do you think that bartender would work at the Lex?
Me: (watching bartender do the boogie woogie with blue shirt boy and Lepord coat, with gold pants woman) Let's ask.
